Loyalty or membership: which suits your restaurant?

Loyalty or membership: which suits your restaurant?

Repeat customers are the backbone of a healthy restaurant. Two of the most popular ways to encourage them are a loyalty programme and a membership scheme. They sound similar, but they suit different businesses and different diners.

How a loyalty programme works

With a loyalty programme, customers earn points or stamps every time they order and exchange them for rewards — a free drink, a discount or a free main. It’s free to join and easy to understand.

Loyalty works well when:

  • You have lots of occasional customers you’d like to see more often.
  • You want a low-barrier way to collect customer details.
  • Your average order value is modest and visits are frequent, such as cafés and takeaways.

The main watch-out is that rewards can feel generic. The best programmes make progress visible — showing a customer how close they are to the next reward — so there’s always a reason to come back soon.

How a membership scheme works

A membership gives customers ongoing perks in exchange for joining a tier, which can be free or paid. Think priority bookings, a monthly dish, exclusive tasting events or a set discount on every visit.

Membership works well when:

  • You have a core group of regulars who already visit often.
  • You can offer experiences, not just discounts — chef’s table nights, early access to new menus.
  • You’d like predictable, recurring revenue from a paid tier.

A paid membership needs to feel clearly worth the money. If the perks pay for themselves in one or two visits, it sells itself.

Why not both?

Many restaurants get the best results by combining the two: a free loyalty programme for everyone, and a membership tier for their biggest fans. Loyalty brings new diners into the habit of returning; membership rewards the people who already have.

Questions to ask before you decide

  • How often does a typical customer visit today?
  • What can you offer that feels special, rather than just cheaper?
  • Can customers see their points, perks and progress easily, ideally on your own website?
  • Will your loyalty data connect to your SMS and email campaigns?

That last point matters most. A loyalty scheme on its own is useful; a loyalty scheme that triggers the right message at the right time is far more powerful.
